Athena 15 Gold Nationals Recap
Our trip to Nationals really started at the regional bid tournament where we went undefeated to earn the CEVA bid. Such a proud moment for our team to wave the flags and know that we would be traveling to Detroit to represent our region. Later in the season we played in the American Division at the Far Western Qualifier tournament. Our team played amazing volleyball and ended up winning the whole tournament. 1st place out of 108 teams!! Such an amazing and fun weekend! After finishing in the gold division for both power league and regionals and taking 2nd place at ECC, we felt good about heading to Detroit to play against some of the best teams in the country. One of our hitters wasn't going to be able to join us for nationals (we missed her!), so we used the extra month of practices to adjust our lineup and get ready. Surprisingly, the extra month of practices went by faster than expected. However, just as we were about to finish up with our last practice, one of our middle hitters went down with an ankle sprain. We were all so bummed for her and weren't sure if she would be able to recover in time. Fortunately, she did recover enough to play and, although we didn't win many matches, we felt we battled with everyone we played.
Overall nationals was a great experience because of level of competition and how many college coaches were there. Pretty much every team there is really good, and it's by far the best competition we see all season. It's so cool to be playing and see college coaches from any college you can think of. It's a great opportunity for them to see you because your playing at such a high level and everyone's play goes up. Although you can't talk to the coaches, if you catch their attention or have previously talked to them it's a great way for them to watch you play.
