Hello Old Club, I wanted to provide an update on Autumn Mayo, an Excel Northwest Alum from the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Autumn just completed the first weekend of her freshman year Spring Volleyball schedule at Armstrong State University in Savannah, GA, and we have some exciting results to report. However, first some background to this great story...Autumn, enjoyed an awesome first season at NCAA Division II ASU, helping lead her team to the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) tournament championship game by leading the team in kills, with 13, in a semifinal win over the University of South Carolina Akin. After the USCA win, the team lost a nail biter in the PBC Championship Match to Flagler College, of St. Augustine, FL; with a fifth set 13-15 loss. The team then went on to win the first round of the NCAA D II Southeast Regional before losing out in the Regional Semifinal to the same USCA team they had just defeated two weeks earlier in the semifinal of the conference tournament. Fast forward, to this past January and the team received some devastating news. It was announced by the Georgia Board of Regents that the athletic program at Armstrong State University was being dropped due to an announced merger with another local Division I program, Georgia Southern University. The team was informed they would be able to complete the established Spring schedule and after that, one of the winningest Division II volleyball programs in the entire Southeast region will be dropped permanently.... Now, to the good part... Armstrong State faced two Division I opponents in the first weekend of Spring Volleyball last weekend, Charleston Southern University of the Big South Conference, and Georgia Southern University, of the Sunbelt Conference. ASU defeated both teams! Autumn had 17 kills, 3 blocks, 4 aces, and 17 digs in a 3-2 scrimmage win at Charleston Southern, and completed the weekend with 14 kills, 2 blocks, 6 aces, 23 digs in a 4-1 scrimmage 'revenge' win at Georgia Southern...GSU is the school merging with ASU to eliminate the ASU programs! The joke now circulating around campus is that the GSU Head Coach should keep the ASU varsity squad and make his GSU varsity squad transfer!! Autumn is a 5'9" Outside Hitter from Battle Ground, WA, and she wanted me to share this story with her former club teammates and she wants to encourage all current players to keep working hard and never let anyone tell you that you are too short to play at the highest level of collegiate competition. (If you are a front row player) Autumn has recently resigned as a transfer full ride scholarship student athlete to NCAA Division II University of Indianapolis, UIndy, as it is known locally in Indianapolis, competes in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. (GVLC) Thanks for letting us share this story... GO EXCELNW! The Mayo's
