Rustys 65 at 2012 Open Championships

Rustys 65s finished 9th overall at the Open Championship in Salt Lake City. They were eliminated by Brazil, but overall they left the tournament feeling good about about their performance. Tom Swanson gives us his recap.

Rustys, seeded 3rd, started out the tournament defeating Grog (25-22, 20-25, 15-7). At the time we didn't know the magnitude of that win. Grog, seeded 7th, went on to win our pool and finish second in the tournament. We finished that day losing to Papakoa (25-18, 25-14).Day two can be described as "close but no cigar". We easily beat Spike Force (25-20, 25-11) before losing to 2nd seeded Brazil (26-24, 25-22). Just a couple of points more and we would have been second in our pool (with an automatic seed into the Gold Division). As it was, we finished in a tie with Brazil for 3rd, but got the 4th seeding spot due to our loss to them. To show how close our pool was, the number 7th and 6th seeds overall were now the top two seeds our of our pool.

ADL 2012 Nat RiverviewMen Lineup

For the second year in a row, the Riverview Men's team represented CEVA at the USAV Open Nationals. After some disappointing matches, the team rallied to win the Silver Division. Team member Erik Jutila shares his team's story.

Last year in Dallas, Texas, we came into the tournament as the 28th seed out of 32 teams. Underrated and fired up, we lost only our first match in pool play and eventually advanced to the gold bracket and finished 9th. This year in Salt Lake City we were seeded 3rd out of 18 teams. Instead of being the underdog in pool play, we came in with targets on our backs, and we took everyone's best shot.On the first day of pool play, we came out strong, and won both matches we played- beating Chicago Coast 25-22, 25-15 and Big Dig (a Boston based team) 25-19, 25-18. While we had four of seven returning players from Dallas, we brought five new guys to Salt Lake City, in hopes of bolstering a sometimes anemic offense. In our first two matches our offense was clicking and we simply overpowered teams.

Capital City Elite Raises $1050 for Dig Pink

Traci Stephenson, our head 16 Black coach and Head Chemeketa Community College Volleyball Coach shared the emotional story of the 2011 PNQ, where one of our player's found out her mother had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. The news was upsetting, not just to this tight night family, but also to our enitre club. Capitol City Elite Volleyball Club was excited that the 2012 Pacific Northwest Qualifier was doing a fundraising effort for the Susan G. Komen, since this year we had much to be thankful for.

Now, a year later at the same tournament, it was exciting to celebrate an amazing mother and breast cancer survivor! She is a role model to players, parents and coaches which is why it was no surprise we had the entire club's support in helping raise over $1000 to donate at the PNQ. We were the second highest donation at the entire tournament and were proud to represent not only our club but also CEVA!

OJVA at 2011 Nationals

Having the opportunity to represent our CEVA region in Atlanta was a great experience. Our OJVA 14 Gold team was fortunate enough to play against some of the best 14s teams in the nation. We competed well and it was definitely the best competition we have ever experienced. We also took a carriage ride around downtown Atlanta and had the opportunity to go to the Coca-Cola Museum. As it turns out Atlanta, Georgia is the world headquarters for Coke!By the end of the tournament I felt as if our team had become much closer. Through our challenges on the court and our escapades during our free time, we were able to band together and form much stronger bonds than ever before. I am sure that we will carry our experiences forward into our next CEVA season as a much stronger team.

Riverview at 2011 Open Championships

The first week of June 2011, the Dallas Convention Center was filled with volleyball players of higher quality and quantity than you could probably find again in any other one place at any one time, until the USAV National Championships visit Salt Lake City, Utah next year. Teams of some of the finest volleyball players from all corners of the US (and some from other countries) converged in warm and muggy Dallas for the volleyball showdown of the year. And the action did not disappoint.

Our Columbia Empire Volleyball Association team,Riverview, played Men's A. Our relatively minor presence at previous National tournaments meant we had a low seed (28th out of 32), and set us up for battles against top seeded teams early in pool play. Our first match, on the first day was against "The Angry Dragons," the team responsible last year for sending CEVA's Downhill to the Silver Bracket (two of our players played with Downhill last season at Nationals), and eliminating a team from Seattle that included another of our players. At a tournament with teams we were mostly unfamiliar with, The Angry Dragons were the closest thing we had to a nemesis in the event- they were the top seed in our pool, and the third seed overall. In an early morning battle, in a new venue, with two guys new to the team, the adjustment period took a little too long, and we were off to a 0-1 start in Dallas.
