Tips from University of Arizona Beach Coach Steve Walker
Head Coach Steve Walker Named Pac-12 Coach of the Year talks about Wildcat Beach Volleyball
CEVA girl Paige Whipple is a Wildcat verbal commit, will she be allowed to play both indoor and sand?
By NCAA rule I am not permitted to comment on prospects until they have signed a National Letter of Intent or financial aid agreements, but I can state that Coach Dave Rubio and I spend a great deal of time talking over potential multi-sport athletes and when they might take to the sand. Each prospect is truly discussed on a case by case basis and we are always looking to better both programs.
Where do you recruit your players?
I am fortunate that I have the resources that I can go essentially anywhere to identify, track and commit prospects. I have players from all over the globe, including players from Serbia, Canada and New Zealand. We work very hard to attract high level athletes to the beach team and we feel we can develop players if they are willing to put in the time and effort.
Does your university offer beach volleyball scholarships?
When do you think every PAC 12 school will offer a team?
Hopefully by 2020 (an Olympic year).
What sets your program apart from the others?
Our ability to develop the cross-over athlete is the thing I may be most proud of. In only 3 seasons, we have 4 AVCA Beach All-Americans and they all came from an indoor background. The latest pair, Madison and McKenna Witt (identical twins) committed to the program having only played recreationally as youth players.
