Rustys 70+ at 2012 Open Championships

ADL 2012 Nat Rustys70 TeamPhoto

Rustys 70+ battles their way through the gold division to take 4th place overall. Tom Swanson has the highlights from Salt Lake City.

There were eight teams in the Men's 70+ tournament at Nationals. Play started with a round robin, with teams playing each of the other teams. Rustys was seeded 5th.
The first day we lost in two games to 3rd seeded Team Sota (25-22, 25-15). We had a better match with 2nd seeded MAC Magic, 25-21, 18-25. 15-13. Not only did we lose by a mere 2 points, but we had outscored them in total points. We felt we could play with any team in the tournament. We won the third match against a team called Olphartz, (25-12, 25-21). After the first day it seemed that there were four teams that were better than the other four. This was important because the top four teams would go into the Gold Division and the bottom four into the Silver Division.

Rustys 65 at 2012 Open Championships

ADL 2012 Nat Rustys65 TeamPhoto

Rustys 65s finished 9th overall at the Open Championship in Salt Lake City. They were eliminated by Brazil, but overall they left the tournament feeling good about about their performance. Tom Swanson gives us his recap.

Rustys, seeded 3rd, started out the tournament defeating Grog (25-22, 20-25, 15-7). At the time we didn't know the magnitude of that win. Grog, seeded 7th, went on to win our pool and finish second in the tournament. We finished that day losing to Papakoa (25-18, 25-14).
Day two can be described as "close but no cigar". We easily beat Spike Force (25-20, 25-11) before losing to 2nd seeded Brazil (26-24, 25-22). Just a couple of points more and we would have been second in our pool (with an automatic seed into the Gold Division). As it was, we finished in a tie with Brazil for 3rd, but got the 4th seeding spot due to our loss to them. To show how close our pool was, the number 7th and 6th seeds overall were now the top two seeds our of our pool.

ADL 2012 Nat RiverviewMen Lineup

For the second year in a row, the Riverview Men's team represented CEVA at the USAV Open Nationals. After some disappointing matches, the team rallied to win the Silver Division. Team member Erik Jutila shares his team's story.

Last year in Dallas, Texas, we came into the tournament as the 28th seed out of 32 teams. Underrated and fired up, we lost only our first match in pool play and eventually advanced to the gold bracket and finished 9th. This year in Salt Lake City we were seeded 3rd out of 18 teams. Instead of being the underdog in pool play, we came in with targets on our backs, and we took everyone's best shot.
On the first day of pool play, we came out strong, and won both matches we played- beating Chicago Coast 25-22, 25-15 and Big Dig (a Boston based team) 25-19, 25-18. While we had four of seven returning players from Dallas, we brought five new guys to Salt Lake City, in hopes of bolstering a sometimes anemic offense. In our first two matches our offense was clicking and we simply overpowered teams.

Capital City Elite Raises $1050 for Dig Pink

Traci Stephenson, our head 16 Black coach and Head Chemeketa Community College Volleyball Coach shared the emotional story of the 2011 PNQ, where one of our player's found out her mother had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. The news was upsetting, not just to this tight night family, but also to our enitre club. Capitol City Elite Volleyball Club was excited that the 2012 Pacific Northwest Qualifier was doing a fundraising effort for the Susan G. Komen, since this year we had much to be thankful for.

Now, a year later at the same tournament, it was exciting to celebrate an amazing mother and breast cancer survivor! She is a role model to players, parents and coaches which is why it was no surprise we had the entire club's support in helping raise over $1000 to donate at the PNQ. We were the second highest donation at the entire tournament and were proud to represent not only our club but also CEVA!
