Power League FAQs

October 1 is our standard date for all tournament registration to begin.  It’s easier to communicate one date to clubs instead of two or more.  Clubs have until December 1 at 3:00 PM to register their teams and all teams who register by December 1 at 3:00 PM will get into Power League.  There’s no advantage to registering early.  They do not have to register on October 1 and, in fact, shouldn’t register until they know what teams they’ve formed for the upcoming season.

Not always, but they can ask. They would need to e-mail the CEVA office. They will only be accepted into Power League if the format of the age division allows for it and if space permits it. Teams are not guaranteed entry if they attempt to register after the deadline, and they may also be subject to the lowest seed in an age group. They will also pay a late registration fee if accepted.

Clubs are asked to put a “self-seed” for each of their teams on their registration form.  The self-seed tells our Junior Girls’ Committee where the club thinks that team should START in the Power League rankings.

No.  Many times, more teams request a specific self-seed grouping than the group can accommodate.  Self-seed groups are broken down into 8 teams each.  If more than 8 teams request a specific self-seed group, then somebody won’t receive the self-seed they asked for.  The Junior Girls’ Committee also is not required to grant a requested self-seed. Self-seeding is made easier if clubs provide information about their teams during registration for Power League.

Yes – up until the registration deadline.  Just e-mail our office.

The committee largely relies on what clubs tell them to seed teams and will usually try to seed teams as close to their desired self-seed as possible, unless other information conflicts with it.  Clubs have the option of giving notes and comments to the Junior Girls’ Committee during their registration process.  Those notes are pivotal to the seeding process.  The committee also looks at finishes from last year’s Power League, Regionals, national championships, national qualifiers, and other events if applicable.

YES!!!  The more information a club submits, the more likely their teams will be seeded appropriately.  It’s critical that clubs provide as much information as possible.

NO!!!  Each season is different, and each team is different from year to year.  While historical finishes can give context to the committee during their seeding process, that information is not the sole determinant of where a team will start this year’s Power League season.  The committee relies much more on this year’s information submitted by the club.

Seeds are randomized because it makes the job of the Junior Girls’ Committee easier when they do their initial seeding.  Instead of needing to give an exact seed number to every team, they put teams into groups of 8 (e.g., a top 8, a next 8, and so on).  As such, seeds aren’t published prior to the first qualifier.

12s, 18s, and Open divisions play in 4 tournaments.  14s and 16s divisions play in 5.

Power League Qualifiers (often referred to as “PLQ”) are the initial tournaments all age groups play in to start the season.  These tournaments have teams separated into bigger groups and allow for more seeding movement.  They’re used to essentially determine where a team should be seeded for the rest of the season.  Regular Power Leagues (referred to as “PL”), which are played after Qualifiers, are where teams are grouped into flights of 8 and only play each other.

Yes – clubs are free to set their own schedules. For example, many clubs try to play in one Power League tournament and one other event each month. Keep in mind, missing a Power League may result in cancellation charges and teams finishing last in their existing group or flight.

No. A team’s Power League ranking will not change during the season except based on the results from Power League tournaments. Other tournaments a team participates in, such as a club-hosted tournament, will not impact a team’s PL ranking.

You can always check this website for when schedules will be posted.  Once we get into the season, schedules for the next Power League will generally be posted on the Thursday after a previous Power League gets done.
